Summary
Harvesting Health and Wealth: Nature-Based Solutions for Health and Prosperity is an eleven-chapter edited volume exploring how Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), the protection, restoration, and sustainable management of natural systems, can simultaneously advance ecosystem health, food security, human well-being, and economic prosperity. Grounded primarily in Pakistan while addressing a global readership, the volume brings together perspectives from agricultural economics, food and nutrition, environmental management, biodiversity, and development finance. Its central contribution is the Harvesting Health and Wealth Framework (HHWF), introduced in Chapter 1, which presents natural capital, sustainable production, food systems, human development, the green economy, and sustainable prosperity as interconnected elements of a regenerative system rather than separate policy domains. Chapters 2–6 examine sustainable agriculture, food security, nutrition, public health, land use, dairy economics, and legume cultivation, while Chapters 7–8 address biodiversity, ecosystem services, integrated natural resource management, and ecotourism. Chapters 9–10 focus on green finance, natural capital investment, renewable-energy adoption, and food security. Chapter 11 synthesizes the evidence and identifies future directions. By connecting diverse empirical and disciplinary perspectives, the volume addresses fragmentation in existing research and demonstrates how ecological sustainability can support resilient food systems, healthier communities, inclusive livelihoods, and long-term prosperity, particularly in climate-vulnerable, agriculture-dependent economies.
